License suspension for alcohol or drugs
The Ley de Tránsito y Vialidad adds a direct consequence for the license: if the driver exceeds the alcohol level (over 0.40 mg/L of exhaled air) or drives under the influence of drugs, psychotropics, narcotics or similar substances — including medications that alter the state appropriate for driving —, in addition to the other sanctions, the license or permit is suspended for 18 months. On a second occurrence the suspension is 3 years, and on a third it is definitive; in the repeat cases the rule applies whether the person is driving with a license or without one.
